He was the son of an illegal immigrant from Ukraine who mined coal in West Virginia. The date of birth listed is just something he made up, he was only 16 when he enlisted. He fought in 3 Bronze Star campaigns as a tank commander in the 1st Armored Division. He was 93 years old and a hero. Rest in peace, Grandpa.

Damn, he looks like something out of a recruitment poster. With a strong jaw like that, who needs a tank?

RIP.

It’s crazy how much things can change within the lifetime of one person.

It was a completely different world back then.

I remember my first computer. I thought 450 Mhz and 6GB of storage space was a lot. Now not even 20 years later there are video cars with more RAM than that, and your phone has like 4 processors in it that all run at about 4 x 450 Mhz and consume about 1/100th of the power my first PC did.

I’m motherfucking goddamned old, is what I’m trying to say.

For proper recognition of his military awards, he more likely earned three Bronze Stars for his actions in those three campaigns. They are awarded to an individual.. Quite an achievement, it would have been an honor to meet him. Very sorry for your loss.

Til Valhalla. Rest in peace.

RIP to your Gramps. That generation witnessed so much change in this world. My wife’s grandma will be 96 in November and she used to fly bombers (b17s I think) from the factory on their inagural flights to various military bases.

I love listening to her stories of the way life used to be. It truly makes me understand how good we have it now.

I’m sorry for your loss. My grandpa was also a WWII vet who we lost at 93 years old. Although that was 13 years ago now, I still miss him. That generation was tougher than we’ll ever be able to comprehend.

I’m sorry for your loss. I hope he lived a happy life after risking it all.

I don’t know what your granddad commanded, but here’s an M4A4 looking (hopefully) bad-ass enough.

My first PC was a 33mHz 486DX with 4MB RAM and a 170 MB hard drive, running Windows 3.1...would’ve been about 1992. I believed my programming & physics teacher, who also built PCs on the side, when he said I’d never fill it up and it would last me for years.

I was out of space in less than a year, and the DX2s were already doubling my speed for less money by the time I started college that fall. While I was lusting after the DX2 PCs, everyone was talking about those new Pentium processors that would be coming out soon.
